About

The College Reading Club

Words & Worlds is SRM Arts and Science College’s dedicated reading club. It brings students and staff together around books — with one activity for students and a separate one for staff, and a common way to find the books worth reading.

Vision

To make reading a visible, valued and shared part of college life — where every student and staff member who wants to read deeply has a book, a platform, and an audience.

Mission

  • Run a structured Book Review Programme every month, with every student paired to a mentor.
  • Build confident, unscripted speaking about what you have actually read.
  • Give staff members an open platform to share the books they have read and experienced.
  • Find books together through Padithathil Pidithathu, where students and staff recommend the books they loved.
  • Make reading a daily habit that builds knowledge — trade a little mobile screen time for a good book.
  • Keep the door open to every reading level — this is where the habit is built, not just shown off.

Padithathil Pidithathu (படித்ததில் பிடித்தது) — Recommend a Book

Read something you loved? Tell us. Students and staff can recommend a book, say why it is worth reading, and share a link or the book’s details. Every nominated book is checked by a Book Selection Committee and approved by the Principal. Approved books are listed on this page, with copies kept in the library or the club shelf for circulation.

Book Review Programme — “Where Words Build Worlds” / “சொற்களால் உலகை எழுப்புவோம்” (for Students)

  1. Register: Sign up when a new cycle opens — no prior experience needed.
  2. Get Paired: You are matched with a mentor who guides you from book selection onward.
  3. Read: 2–3 weeks to read the book — a printed copy, read away from your phone, is best — with your mentor available for guidance.
  4. Present: A short oral presentation — no slides, no script — just you and the book.
  5. Get Recognised: Presentations are scored live; the best are celebrated at the close of the cycle, alongside the Best Mentor.

Staff Book Review Circle — “Read. Reflect. Share.” / “படித்தோம். சிந்தித்தோம். பகிர்ந்தோம்.” (for Staff)

  1. Nominate: Tell us the book you want to share, and why.
  2. Share: Speak for about ten minutes — or send a short note — on what you read and experienced.
  3. Talk: An open conversation with colleagues, with no scores and no judging.
  4. Circulate: Your book, or the library copy, goes on loan for others to read.
